Wide aisles invited a leisurely stroll between stands, each carefully presented down to the smallest detail. Attendance was strong without ever detracting from the quality of conversations. The atmosphere encouraged admiration, discovery, and sometimes acquisition. Carefully lit display cases presented an impressive variety of stones, remarkable both for their quality and their exceptional sizes.

Some sapphires were large enough to be museum pieces; cushion- and pear-cut emeralds weighed several tens of carats ; while spinels, rubellites and Paraíba tourmalines appeared in generous sizes rarely seen elsewhere. The displayed prices varied considerably, from a few hundred euros for small coloured gems to several hundred thousand, or even more than a million euros for the rarest gems, particularly certain fancy colour diamonds or unheated sapphires of exceptional origin (Kashmir).

An interesting aside: Geneva also stood out for a spectacular sale conducted by Sotheby’s in May 2025, involving a blue diamond of rare intensity, named « Mediterranean Blue’. Major international diamond dealers were also present, showing Flawless stones, fancy colour, in large sizes and both classic and fancy shapes. Yet it was coloured stones that caught every eye. The electric blue of spinels from Vietnam (Luc Yen), the intense green of tsavorites (Kenya), the fuchsia of tourmalines of the rubellite variety and the blazing orange of spessartite garnets dominated the most sought-after display cases.

Continuing this theme, opals (precious, boulder, black or fire opals) held a special place at the fair, revealing their magnificent play of colour across many stands. Whether from Ethiopia,Australia or Mexico, they all displayed entire galaxies of iridescent colours. Shades ranged from deep blue to electric green, through milky pinks and reddish-orange tones reminiscent of a blazing fire. Some dealers highlighted rough stones, while others offered cabochons or already mounted pieces, often in creations with an organic design, to emphasise the gem’s character living and shifting quality.

The colours in fashion in 2025 tended towards tones that were vibrant and luminous : the neon blue of Paraíbatourmalines, the subtle lavender of spinels, the anise green of chrysoberyls, and the pinkish orange of sapphires Padparadscha reminiscent of a soft sunset. Amid exceptional stones, high jewellery, scientific presentations and bold creations, all presented in of vibrant colour palettes, every visitor left with sparkling eyes and a heart beating a little faster to the rhythm of the stones.

___________________________________________________________________________

English version

GemGenève 2025: A World Where Gemstones Become a Universal Language

On 9 May 2025, the GemGenève show once again transformed the Palexpo halls into a dazzling theatre devoted to mineral beauty. Over four days, the event brought together hundreds of exhibitors from around the world, attracting dealers, collectors, designers, jewellers, students and enthusiasts around a shared passion: gemstones.

Entry was smooth, and the personalised welcome led to the cloakroom, dining area and lounge. Wide aisles encouraged leisurely exploration between stands, each meticulously presented down to the smallest detail. Attendance was strong without ever detracting from the quality of conversations. The atmosphere encouraged admiration, discovery and sometimes acquisition. Carefully lit display cases presented an impressive variety of stones, remarkable both for their quality and their exceptional sizes.

Some sapphires reached museum-worthy dimensions; cushion- and pear-cut emeralds weighed several dozen carats; while spinels, rubellites and Paraíba tourmalines appeared in generous sizes rarely seen elsewhere. Prices varied widely, from a few hundred euros for small coloured gems to several hundred thousand — or even over a million — for the rarest gems, notably certain fancy colour diamonds or unheated sapphires of exceptional origin (Kashmir).

An interesting aside: Geneva also made headlines with a spectacular Sotheby’s sale in May 2025, featuring a rare blue diamond named Mediterranean Blue. The stone fetched $21.5 million, thanks to its ten carats of Fancy Vivid Blue colour, cut from a rough stone of around thirty carats extracted two years earlier from the renowned Cullinan mine in South Africa.

The notable trend this year was the clear dominance of coloured stones. Major international diamond dealers were also present, showing Flawless and fancy colour diamonds in large sizes and both classic and fanciful shapes. Yet coloured stones stole the show. The electric blue of Vietnamese spinels (Luc Yen), the deep green of tsavorites (Kenya), the fuchsia hues of rubellite tourmalines and the blazing orange of spessartite garnets filled the most coveted displays.

Continuing this trend, opals — precious, boulder, black or fire — held a special place at the fair, revealing their magnificent play of colour across many stands. From Ethiopia, Australia or Mexico, each displayed entire galaxies of iridescent hues. Shades ranged from deep blue to electric green, from milky pinks to fiery reddish oranges. Some dealers highlighted rough stones, while others presented polished cabochons or mounted pieces, often in organic designs emphasising the gem’s living, ever-shifting character.

The fashionable colours of 2025 tended towards vibrant, luminous tones: the neon blue of Paraíba tourmalines, the soft lavender of spinels, the bright green of chrysoberyls and the pinkish orange of Padparadscha sapphires, reminiscent of a gentle sunset. These shades fitted perfectly with new, bolder and more expressive jewellery aesthetics, reflecting today’s desire for rarity and individuality.

Beyond the gems, the range of professions represented reflected the sector’s vitality: lapidaries, engravers, designers, illustrators and young artisans mingled with historic houses. Among the standout discoveries was an artist’s studio personalising bags and objects with painted gemstone designs, offering one-off pieces that combined decorative art with a passion for minerals.

An understated yet striking exhibition, at the crossroads of art and jewellery, highlighted works merging materials and gemstones in an abstract, vibrant aesthetic. These creations, in which gems and pigments conversed, formed a poetic bridge between raw mineralogy and contemporary artistic expression.

Away from the bustle, a reading corner offered a carefully selected range of specialist books — from gemstone monographs and gemmological guides (Terra Spinel, AutoAtlas, etc.) to rare and antique volumes for enthusiasts and professionals seeking reference material or inspiration.

All this was complemented by a photomicrography competition devoted to natural gemstone inclusions. Through images magnified to a microscopic scale, crystals, frost-like patterns and internal structures appeared as invisible landscapes. Some inclusions took the form of feathers, stars or clouds — a silent tribute to the inner beauty of gems.

Lectures, workshops and panel discussions also punctuated the programme, covering both technical and ethical subjects: innovations in optical analysis, supply chain traceability, environmental concerns and the evolving post-pandemic market.

One example of innovation came from SRK, the company behind the SGS – SRK Grading System, which offers a 17-step grading method, far beyond the classic 4Cs (carat, colour, clarity and cut). This represents a strong commitment to raising traditional standards of diamond evaluation. Praised for its rigour, the initiative could inspire others in the industry.

Ultimately, the 2025 edition proved to be much more than a professional trade show: it was a meeting place for science, emotion and culture, where gemmology was expressed as a complete art form.
